Biographical Information

Lefthanded pitcher Will Stewart was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 20th round in 2015, out of a high school in Alabama. Well regarded despite being only picked in the 20th round, he signed for a $100,000 bonus. He spent his first two pro seasons, 2015 and 2016, with the GCL Phillies, going 1-0, 4.79 in 11 games the first year and 2-3, 4.06 the second, also in 11 games, but this time making 7 starts. he spent the 2017 season with the Williamsport Crosscutters of the New York-Penn League where he was 4-2, 5.52 in 13 starts. He suddenly emerged as a prospect in 2018, however, as he put up a record of 8-1, 2.06 in 20 starts for the Lakewood Blue Claws in the South Atlantic League. It was his first year of full-season ball and he logged 113 2/3 innings, almost doubling his previous high of 60 1/3 innings the previous season, and struck out 90 batters while walking 21.

Having established himself as a legitimate prospect, Stewart was included in a major trade with the Miami Marlins on February 7, 2019. He joined major league catcher Jorge Alfaro and pitcher Sixto Sanchez, the top prospect in the Phillies' organization at the time, heading to Miami in return for All-Star C J.T. Realmuto. The Marlins also received $250,000 in international bonus slot money.
