Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Wellington Cepeda played five seasons in the Arizona Diamondbacks organization and later became a coach.
Cepeda debuted with the 1996 DSL Diamondbacks, going 7-3 with a 2.09 ERA. He was 9th in the Dominican Summer League in ERA. He was 4-0 with a 1.64 ERA for the AZL Diamondbacks in his first US season of 1997. Had he qualified, he would have paced the Arizona League in ERA.
In '98, Cepeda led the South Bend Silver Hawks with 40 appearances and was 4-2 with two saves and a 3.08 ERA. He faded to 6-6 with two saves and a 5.71 ERA for the 1999 High Desert Mavericks. In his last season as a player, Cepeda was 2-3 with a 5.90 ERA back in South Bend.
Following his playing days, Cepeda joined the Arizona Diamondbacks organization in 2001 as a pitching coach for the DSL Diamondbacks. His exact role in 2002 is unclear, though he did finish the season as a pitching coach for the Missoula Osprey. He returned to Missoula in 2003-2004 in the same role. The D'backs promoted him to pitching coach of the South Bend Silver Hawks for the 2005-2007 seasons and then to the Visalia Oaks/Visalia Rawhide staff in 2008 and 2009. Cepeda returned to the Silver Hawks as pitching coach in 2010-2013. He moved up to the Mobile BayBears in 2014-2015. Cepeda stepped away from coaching an individual team in 2016-2018 and worked as the Diamondbacks' Minor League Short Season Pitching Coordinator during that stretch. He completed this phase of his D'backs career as manager of the AZL Diamondbacks in 2019.
In 2020, Cepeda received his first major league coaching job as bullpen coach of the Miami Marlins and stayed until the end of the 2024 season. After losing 100 games in 2024, the Marlins released their entire coaching staff and Cepeda was one of the casualties. In 2025, he moved to the Arizona Diamondbacks, also as bullpen coach.
In addition to his coaching work in the United States, Cepeda has extensive experience coaching and managing in the winter leagues. He was a coach for the Leones del Escogido in the Dominican League during the 2008/2009 season. In 2009/2010 and 2010/2011 he was the pitching coach for the Senadores de San Juan in the Puerto Rican League. During the latter season he served as the team's interim manager for a brief period. Cepeda returned to the Dominican League in 2014/2015 as pitching coach for the Gigantes del Cibao. In 2016/2017 and 2017/2018 he was the pitching coach for the rival Tigres del Licey. He returned to the Gigantes on November 22, 2018 as a bench coach. From 2019/2020 to 2022/2023 he worked as the pitching coach for the Gigantes. The Gigantes promoted him to manager for the 2023/2024 through 2024/2025 seasons. He voluntarily left the organization after the latter season.
Cepeda was the pitching coach for the Dominican Republic teams in the 2009 World Baseball Classic and 2023 World Baseball Classic tournaments.
