Venezuela is a country located in northern South America, on the coast of the Caribbean Sea. Its capital is Caracas and major cities include Maracaibo, Valencia, Maracay and Barquisimeto. It is divided into 23 states, and includes a number of islands off its coast in the Caribbean Sea. Its economy is dominated by the oil and gas industry, which has led to periods of boom and bust, and its politics have been largely unstable since its independence in 1811, with long periods of military dictatorship and autocratic civilian governments.

There is a long history of baseball in Venezuela, reflected by its status as one of the traditional countries that take part in the Caribbean Series. In this instance, it is represented by the champion of the Venezuelan League, a winter league that represents the top level of baseball played in the country. The country also hosted a franchise in the short-lived Inter-American League and a summer baseball league similar to the Dominican Summer League, the Venezuelan Summer League. However, that league which started operations in 1997 was disbanded in 2016 due to political and social unrest. The Venezuelan national team has participated in all editions of the World Baseball Classic and is a regular participant in other regional competitions such as the Pan-American Games. However, Venezuela has never been able to qualify for the Olympics.

Venezuela has produced three Chicago White Sox star shortstops: Chico Carrasquel, Luis Aparicio, and Ozzie Guillen. In 2004, Guillen became the first Venezuelan to manage in the major leagues when he was hired by the White Sox, and the following season he became the first Latino manager to win the World Series.
