Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Tyler Uberstine was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 19th round of the 2021 amateur draft out of Northwestern University where he played two seasons - the first of which was cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic. Before that, he had been at the University of Southern California studying business. He was cut from the club team and then failed to make the varsity team as a walk-on, prompting him to transfer to another school. Of course, the fact that he stood just 5'5" in high school until a late growth spurt and that he did not make the varsity team until his senior year, and hardly played even then, did not make him a hot recruit and helps to explain why he was given just a cursory look at USC. Before moving to Northwestern, he worked with former major league pitcher Joe Beimel at Driveline Baseball to increase his velocity, allowing him to touch 90 mph. A stint in the MLB Draft League after the 2021 college season also helped to increase his visibility before that year's draft, resulting in his being taken in the penultimate round.
He missed the entire 2023 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery, then was limited to just three starts with the Greenville Drive in 2024, before pitching in the Arizona Fall League. He made up for lost time in 2025 when he started the year in AA with the Portland Sea Dogs and after three starts was promoted to the AAA Worcester Red Sox. His combined record in 25 games (21 starts) was 6-5, 3.58 with 137 strikeouts in 120 2/3 innings. That performance vaulted him up the Red Sox prospect rankings.
He did not make the major league team out of spring training in 2026, but after one start at Worcester was called up to Boston on April 3rd, replacing an injured Johan Oviedo. He made his debut on April 5th, pitching in relief against the San Diego Padres. He gave up just 1 run on 3 hits in 2 2/3 innings, on a solo homer by Jackson Merrill, but it came just after the Red Sox had managed to close a 6-4 deficit while he was on the mound, and he was thus burdened with the 8-6 loss even though he was arguable the most effective of the four Boston pitchers who faced more than one batter that day.
