Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Tyler Davis was a two-way player in college. He started at Wichita State University in 2018, then moved to Panola College in 2019 and Sam Houston State University in 2020. He benefitted from an extra year of eligibility after the COVID-19 pandemic cut short the 2020 season, and he was a graduate student by the time he played his final season in 2023. That final season, he was mainly a first baseman, batting .423 with 7 homers and 60 RBIs in 63 games, with only 3 innings on the mound. That disparity was largely the result of an arm injury sustained in 2022, which limited to just 1 inning on the mound that year: in 2021, he had gone 6-5, 5.75 as a regular starting pitcher for Sam Houston, logging 76 2/3 innings.
He went undrafted after college and signed as an amateur free agent with the Chicago White Sox on June 7, 2024 after starting the year with the Oakland Ballers of the independent Pioneer League. He was already 25 at the time, a result of his extended stay in college, and the White Sox were only interested in him as a pitcher. He pitched at four different levels that first season, starting in the Arizona Complex League but also pitching 5 innings and earning a win with the Charlotte Knights of the AAA International League. Not considered much of a prospect at the time, he was just sent where the need was greatest, and ended up going 2-1, 3.46 in 26 games and 41 2/3 innings. In 2025, he spent a full season with the AA Birmingham Barons where he was 2-7, 3.17 with 3 saves in 41 games and 64 strikeouts in 54 innings. Those numbers looked like those of a genuine prospect, irrespective of the route he had taken to get to AA, so the Sox sent him to the Arizona Fall League after the season, along with other top prospects from across the minors.
He started the 2026 season in AAA with Charlotte and was 1-0, 4.91 after 6 games when he was called up to Chicago on April 23rd. He made his big league debut two days later, pitching a scoreless inning in a 6-3 loss to the Washington Nationals.
