Biographical Information[edit]
Takao Ise played in Nippon Pro Baseball for 14 years.
Ise was signed by the Kintetsu Buffaloes in 1963 as a pitcher, and he was turned into a batter in 1966. He went 3-for-32 in 1967, and he had a .255/.293/.330 batting line in 1968. On May 18, 1969, he was used as pinch-runner for Jim Gentile after he hit a homer but left the stadium due to leg injury. That was the first time in NPB history that a batter had to be replaced in the middle of circling the bases on a home run. Ise crushed 16 homers with a .261/.317/.475 batting line in 1969, but he slumped to .238/.273/.346 with 4 homers in 1970.
The Hyogo native bounced back in 1971, and he crushed a career-high 28 homers with a .230/.290/.485 batting line. He was 8th in the Pacific League in homers, between Katsuya Nomura and Michiyo Arito. Ise recorded a .257/.307/.417 batting line with 14 homers in 1972, then his batting line was .265/.308/.412 with 7 homers in 1973. He lost the starting spot after Clarence Jones joined the team in 1974, and his batting line fell to .185/.275/.358. Ise the played 78 games with a .281/.336/.429 batting line in 1975, and he struggled in 1976 as his batting line was .204/.262/.345 with 7 homers.
The Buffaloes traded him to the Yakult Swallows for Mike Masukawa after the 1976 season, and Ise had a .273/.284/.333 batting line in 1977. He hit .262/.384/.361 in 73 games in 1978, then was 1 for 2 in the 1978 Japan Series as Yakult won their first title; he backed up Charlie Manuel, Toru Sugiura and Tsutomu Wakamatsu in the outfield. He slumped to .143/.167/.229 in 1979. He was 1-for-6 in 1980, and he announced his retirement. Ise was the minor league batting coach for the Swallows from 1981 to 1986, the fielding coach for the Hiroshima Carp in 1987 and the batting coach for the Carp in 1988. He returned to Yakult as batting coach from 1989 to 1995, and he moved to the Buffaloes from 1996 to 2001. He was a scout for the Buffaloes from 2002 to 2005, and he went to the Yomiuri Giants as their batting coach in 2007. The SK Wyverns named him their batting coach from 2008 to 2009 (they won the 2008 Korean Series), and he was the batting coach for the Swallows from 2010 to 2013.
Overall, Ise hit .245/.295/.403 with 570 hits and 90 homers in 14 seasons in NPB.
