Biographical Information[edit]

Susumu Omata pitched in Nippon Pro Baseball for 9 years.

Omata was drafted by the Hiroshima Carp in the 5th round of the 1972 NPB draft, and he only got 12 appearances combined in his first three seasons. The Carp then sent him to the Yomiuri Giants for Yasuhiro Hagiwara, and he was 3-0 with a 2.84 ERA in 30 relief outings in 1977. Omata had a 4.26 ERA in 29 games in 1978, but his ERA rose to 5.59 in 21 appearances in 1979. The Giants then traded him with Tomohisa Shoji and Isao Tamura to the Lotte Orions for Masaaki Koga and Seiichi Ogawa, and he went 6-4 with a 3.47 ERA in 1980. Omata slumped to 2-3 with a 8.27 ERA in 1981, and he went 3-5 with a 4.21 ERA in 1982. He struggled again as he was 0-4 with a 7.31 ERA in 1983, and he was traded to the Nippon Ham Fighters after staying in the minors for the entire 1984 season. Omata failed to return to the top team in 1985, and he announced his retirement. He later became a scout, signing Masumi Hoshino.

Overall, Omata was 16-18 with a 4.73 ERA, struck out 235 and pitched 447 1/3 innings in 9 seasons in NPB.
