Sports Illustrated

Founded in 1954 (its first issue came out on August 16th, with a picture of Eddie Mathews gracing its cover), Sports Illustrated has been the most successful sports magazine in the USA in terms of publicity and subscriptions. When compared to its older rival, The Sporting News, Sports Illustrated has historically had less of a focus on baseball and placed more emphasis on photography and feature stories than on day-to-day coverage of the major leagues. It eclipsed Sport, which was the leader in that segment of the media market until the early 1960s. SI named a Sportsman of the Year annually beginning in 1954.
