Biographical Information[edit]

Shion Matsuo has caught in Nippon Pro Baseball.

Matsuo represented Japan in the 2022 U-18 Baseball World Cup. He hit .321/.333/.357, handled 54 chances error-free and threw out two of the four who tried to steal on him. He helped Japan win Bronze and was named the All-Star catcher. The Yokohama BayStars selected him in the first round of the 2022 NPB draft; the scout was Tateki Abe. He crushed 7 homers with a .277/.314/.408 batting line in the NPB Farm Leagues in 2023, and he hit for a cycle on September 6. He was 5th in batting (between Nagi Murakawa and Atsushi Katsumata), 4th in doubles (tied with Ren Sawai and Ren Wada) and 3rd in hits in the Eastern League (9 behind Fumiya Kurokawa). Matsuo extended his dominance in the minors in 2024, and he crushed 3 homers with a .326/.384/.431 batting line. He was 7th in hits, between Daiki Irie and Shunta Tanaka. Matsuo also recorded a .211/.250/.290 batting line in 27 games for the top team (Yuudai Yamamoto got the bulk of the work at catcher), and he got a pinch-hit double against Livan Moinelo in the 2024 Nippon Series Game 2. The BayStars beat the Softbank Hawks in 6 games.
