Shawn Ross has played in the minors and for the Puerto Rican national team.
He hit .262/.410/.477 at Faulkner University in 2020, with 23 RBI in 22 games. In 2021, he batted .330/.454/.648 with 16 homers and 62 runs in 51 games. His last year, he hit .317/.454/.639 with 18 HR and 69 RBI in 56 games, going 17-for-20 in steal attempts. He won the Southern States Athletic Conference Player of the Year. [1] Signing with the Grand Junction Rockies after graduating, he produced at a .280/.408/.614 clip with 24 homers and 90 RBI in 81 games. He was second in the Pioneer League in homers (8 behind Jayson Newman-Dodd), and 7th in RBI (between Brian Dansereau and Alex Stinnett).
Playing for Puerto Rico in the 2022 U23 Baseball World Cup, he batted .217/.269/.522 and fielded .933 at third base. He went deep off South Korea's Seung-ju Han and Germany's Brandon Schrepf (a two-run shot to give his team the 3-1 win). He tied Chris Burke and Jesus Chirinos for the event home run lead. [2] He was then signed by the Pittsburgh Pirates. In the winter of 2022-2023, he eked out a .119/.253/.191 line for RA12 in the Roberto Clemente Professional Baseball League.
In 2023, he batted .203/.324/.467 with 14 HR in 55 games for the Greensboro Grasshoppers, playing catcher, second, short, third and the outfield. He struck out 88 times in 182 at-bats, though. Despite his limited time, he tied for 10th in the Bucco chain in homers - even with Nick Gonzales, Aaron Shackelford and Josiah Sightler. He missed the South Atlantic League top-ten by one. He was 3 for 40 with six walks and 19 strikeouts for RA12 that winter.
With Greensboro in 2024, he hit .193/.334/.459 with 23 homers in 305 at-bats but 132 strikeouts. He threw out 28% of those who tried to steal. He led the SAL in long balls, three ahead of Luis Báez and Bryan Gonzalez. He tied Wes Kath and Jared Serna for 8th in RBI (58), tied William Lugo for 8th in walks (57) and was 9th in strikeouts. In the Bucco chain, he tied Matt Gorski for the most dingers, tied Jhonny Severino for 7th in RBI, was 6th in walks (between Esmerlyn Valdez and Mitch Jebb) and tied Javier Rivas for 6th in K. He then played for Puerto Rico in the 2024 Premier 12, starting at first base. He hit 5th in their opening upset win over Team USA and singled off veteran Rich Hill his first time up. After that, it was downhill as he was 1-for-18 with a walk, run and a RBI the rest of the tourney while striking out eight times. He handled 34 chances error-free. [3]
