Biographical Information[edit]
OF/1B Matt Gorski hit a home run in his first major league at-bat. It came on April 24, 2025, when he started at first base for the Bucs against the Los Angeles Angels and went deep off Tyler Anderson in the top of the 2nd inning. He went 1 for 4 in the 4-3 loss. He was the first Pirates player to homer in his first at-bat since Starling Marte in 2012. In an interesting twist, he was the second native of Fishers, IN to make it to the majors; the first, P Craig Yoho, had done so three days earlier.
The Pirates had drafted him out of Indiana University in the 2nd round of the 2019 amateur draft and he was in his fourth season at AAA when he was called up by the Pirates, although the first two had been mere cups of coffee at the level. In 2024, however, he had hit 23 homers and driven in 67 runs while batting .257 in 114 games for the Indianapolis Indians, and he was hitting .300 with 3 homers through 18 games there at the start of the 2025 season. With Jack Suwinski being sent down and Spencer Horwitz injured, the Bucs decided to give Gorski a look at The Show.
