Biographical Information[edit]
Rui Makino pitched in Nippon Pro Baseball for 17 years.
Makino was drafted by the Orix BlueWave in the 3rd round of the 1992 NPB draft, and he only pitched 17 games combined in his first four seasons. He had a 7.63 ERA in 11 appearances in 1997, and he stayed in the minors for nearly the entire 1998 season. Makino's ERA was 3.54 in 17 games in 1999, and he recorded a 3.14 ERA in 34 relief outings in 2000. However, he was demoted again so he only got 10 appearances combined in the next two seasons. Makino had a 2-7 record with a 5.05 ERA in 49 appearances in 2003, and he was traded with Ikuro Katsuragi to the Hanshin Tigers for Shinji Taninaka and Hidemitsu Saito.
The Tokyo native recorded a 2.48 ERA in 27 appearances in 2004, but he only pitched 2 games in 2005. The Tigers then set him to the Rakuten Golden Eagles for Katsuhiko Saka, and he was 2-0 with a 2.49 ERA in 2006. His ERA rose to 5.03 in 18 games in 2007, and the Golden Eagles traded him to the Hiroshima Carp for Kenta Satake. Makino's ERA was 3.52 in 6 games in 2008, and he announced his retirement after having a 4.22 ERA in 14 relief outings in 2009. He then managed the Tokushima Indigo Socks in 2019 and Gunma Diamond Pegasus from 2020 to 2022. He scouted for the Orix Buffaloes in 2023, and he became their pitching coach in 2024.
Overall, Makino was 13-23 with a 4.33 ERA , struck out 337 and pitched 388 2/3 innings in 17 seasons in NPB.
