Biographical Information[edit]

Richard Jerome "Rome" Chambers appeared in one game for the 1900 Boston Beaneaters.

Chambers was born and died in Weaverville, NC, near Asheville in far-western North Carolina. He also attended high school in Weaverville.

By 1897 he was playing in the minors with Richmond, where Jack Chesbro was a teammate.

Chambers was the fourth player out of North Carolina to come to the majors, and through 2009 the only one born in Weaverville.

"Rome Chambers, the North Carolina giant, who was expected to make the batsmen of the League look like 30 cents, has decided to bury his disappointment in the hills of his native State. He has left Boston for Asheville to speculate on what might have been had he been given a thorough trial by Manager Selee." - Sporting Life, June 9, 1900
