Biographical Information[edit]
Outfielder Roman Anthony was considered the number 1 prospect in baseball when he made his major league debut with the Boston Red Sox on June 9, 2025. He was drafted by the Red Sox out of high school in the 2nd round of the 2022 amateur draft. He hit .306 in 20 games between two teams that year, then in 2023 put up a slash line of .272/.403/.466 with 14 homers and 64 RBIs in 106 games at three levels. He was named a post-season All-Star in the South Atlantic League, a Baseball America Minor League All-Star and a Boston organizational All-Star. He continued to build expectations with another strong season in 2024, when he was a late addition to the American League's Futures Game roster as an inactive reserve and hit .291/.396/.498 in 119 games. He hit 32 doubles and 18 home runs, scored 93 runs and drove in 65. He was again named a Minor League All-Star by Baseball America. In spring training in 2025, he was one of three top-ranked prospects fighting for attention on the Red Sox, alongside infielders Kristian Campbell and Marcelo Mayer. Campbell broke camp with the team and Mayer followed a few weeks later, while he was assigned to the AAA Worcester Red Sox. He hit .288 in 58 games with 10 homers and attracted even more attention when he hit a gigantic 497-foot grand slam on June 7th - longer than any homer hit in the majors that season. With the major league Red Sox playing poorly, it was only a matter of time before he was called up to Boston as well.
In his debut on June 9, 2025, he started in right field and batted fifth against the Tampa Bay Rays and went 0 for 4, but with a walk and a RBI. He was the youngest player in the majors at the time, although he only held that title for a couple of weeks, until Didier Fuentes, who was a full year younger, made his debut on June 20th. Anthony had been called up to replace Wilyer Abreu, who had been placed on the injured list. He got his first major league hit on June 10th, a double off Ryan Pepiot that drove in two runs in the bottom of the 1st in a 3-1 Boston win over the Rays. His first week with the team was an eventful one, as the Red Sox won six consecutive games, including a three-game sweep of their eternal rivals the New York Yankees, while also swinging a surprise blockbuster trade that moved DH and franchise icon Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants. For his part, Roman went just 2 for 21 in his first seven games, but his second hit was also his first major league homer, and it came off Logan Gilbert in the 1st inning of a 2-0 win over the Seattle Mariners at T-Mobile Park on June 16th. He was the youngest player to homer for the Red Sox since Devers. After two months and 46 games in the majors, he was hitting .283 with 2 homers and 19 RBIs, with an OBP of .400 and an OPS+ of 132. The Red Sox, who were 32-16 since his debut, must have liked that early sample of what he could do as on August 6th they announced that they had signed Anthony to an eight-year contract extension worth $130 million, with possible escalators that could add another $100 million to its value. He had a great game in his first visit to New Yankee Stadium on August 21st, as he went 2 for 5 with a walk, 2 runs and 3 RBIs in a 6-3 win over the New York Yankees to start a four-game showdown between the two bitter rivals. His night included a two-run homer in the 9th that iced Boston's win. He was named the Rookie of the Month in the American League for August after hitting .304 and slugging .520. His season ended shortly after that, as he played his last game on September 2nd then went on the injured list with an oblique strain, which forced him to miss the postseason as well. He finished the season at .292 in 71 games, with an OBP of .396, 8 homers, 48 runs and 32 RBIs. His OPS+ was 140 and he made the major league All-Rookie team and finished third in the voting for the 2025 American League Rookie of the Year Award.
He was not originally on Team USA's roster for the 2026 World Baseball Classic, but on February 16th he was named as a replacement for Corbin Carroll, who had to miss the tournament due to hamate bone surgery.
