Biographical information[edit]
Catcher Roly de Armas played in the Philadelphia Phillies chain from 1973 to 1977.
De Armas began his post-playing career as a player/coach for the Peninsula Pilots in 1977 and coached the team full-time in 1978. He was a minor league manager from 1979 to 1992, then coached the Clearwater Phillies in 1993. In 1994, de Armas joined the Chicago White Sox as a bullpen catcher and he started the 1995 season in that capacity. However, on June 2nd, the Sox fired manager Gene Lamont and some of his coaches. Bullpen coach Rick Peterson was one of the castoffs and de Armas took over his job. Roly returned as bullpen coach in 1996. The 1996 bullpen staff blew 32 of 75 save opportunities which led to de Armas being replaced after the season.
De Armas was the Arizona Diamondbacks' minor league catching instructor in 1999, and held the same post for the Philadelphia Phillies in 2005-2006. He was also a bullpen coach at the big league level for the Toronto Blue Jays in 2000. De Armas last managed in 2021 as skipper of the FCL Phillies. After the season he was named the Mike Coolbaugh Award winner which is presented nationally to an individual who has shown "outstanding baseball work ethic, knowledge of the game and skill in mentoring young players on the field."[1] He returned to the FCL Phillies in 2022 as a coach. From 2023-2025 de Armas worked as a Player Development Instructor for the Phillies. He returned to the FCL Phillies yet again as bench coach in 2026.
He coached for Team USA in the 2007 Baseball World Cup, when they won their first Gold in over 30 years in a Baseball World Cup. He was with the US when they won Bronze in the 2008 Olympics, a Gold in the 2009 Baseball World Cup, a tie for third in the 2010 Pan American Games Qualifying Tournament, the 2011 Baseball World Cup and 2011 Pan American Games. He returned to them for the 2015 Pan American Games (Silver) and 2015 Premier 12 (second) then was back again for the 2019 Premier 12 and 2021 Americas Olympic Qualifier. In 2021, de Armas served as the bullpen coach for the American squad at the Tokyo Olympics.
