Biographical Information

Rob Zastryzny made his first Opening Day roster with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2023, in his fifth season in the majors and tenth as a pro. He wound up getting the win in relief of Mitch Keller with 1 1/3 shutout innings, David Bednar saving it. The opening had come about due to an injury to Jarlín García. He had just come off a 2023 World Baseball Classic appearance with Team Canada, which had not gone as well, when he allowed three runs in two innings to lose to José Urquidy and Mexico with a quarterfinal spot on the line.

He first came up to the majors with the Chicago Cubs in 2016, the year they broke their historic World Series drought. He went 1-0 with a 1.13 ERA in 8 games, pitching 16 innings, but did not appear in the postseason. The Cubs had drafted him in the 2nd round of the 2013 amateur draft, out of the University of Missouri, but he was originally from Edmonton, AB. He again pitched briefly for the Cubs in both 2017 and 2018, but only a total of 10 games those two years.

He was out of the major leagues from 2019 to 2021, pitching in the minors in the Los Angeles Dodgers and Miami Marlins organizations, and missing the middle year because the COVID-19 pandemic had shut down the minor leagues. In 2022, he made it back briefly to the Show, with 5 games for the Los Angeles Angels and 1 with the New York Mets. In 2023, after starting the season in Pittsburgh, he went 1-0, 4.79 in 21 games, and another 15 in AAA with the Indianapolis Indians. He was mainly in AAA with the Nashville Sounds in 2024, but also got into 9 games with the Milwaukee Brewers, going 1-0, 1.17. He pitched another 26 games for Milwaukee in 2025, going 2-1, 2.45. That came after having started the season in the New York Yankees organization but only pitching in AAA with them.

He was named to Team Canada's roster for the 2026 World Baseball Classic.

Notable Achievements
