Biographical Information[edit]
Ricky Kimball played in the minor leagues and for the USA national baseball team.
Kimball was drafted by the New York Mets in the 5th round of the 1987 Amateur Draft out of high school, but he didn't sign and went to college. In 1989, his 34 appearances tied Bobby Jones for 13th in NCAA Division I while his 11.3 K/IP were 6th, between Brian Williams and Joe Ganote. [1] FSU made the 1989 College World Series. He represented the USA in the 1989 Intercontinental Cup. For the summer, he was 3-3 with 2 saves and a 3.43 ERA for the US, tying Chris Haney for the team lead in appearances while only Dan Smith (3.39) had a better ERA among their hurlers who appeared in more than one contest. [2] He went 7-5 with 9 saves and a 3.75 ERA for the 1991 Seminoles. [3]
The St. Louis Cardinals then picked him in the 17th round of the 1990 Amateur Draft, but he didn't sign either. FSU was the #1 seed in the 1991 College World Series. He was 23-9 with 33 saves and a 3.12 ERA for his collegiate career. [4] That was still the FSU all-time record as of 2026. [5] Kimball was drafted by Oakland Athletics in the 7th round of the 1991 Amateur Draft (one round before Scott Sheldon), and he notched 11 saves with a 2.97 ERA in 27 relief outings for the Southern Oregon A's in 1991. He was one save behind Northwest League leader Troy Percival and fanned 44 in 33 1/3 IP. He also pitched 2 games with a 4.50 ERA for the Madison Muskies, and that ended his pro career.
