Biographical Information[edit]

Shortstop Richie Martin was the 20th overall pick in the 2015 amateur draft, having been taken by the Oakland Athletics; he was scouted by Trevor Schaffer. He was originally drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the 38th round of the 2012 amateur draft, but opted not to sign.

He slashed .237/.353/.342 with two home runs and 16 RBI in 51 games with the Vermont Lake Monsters in 2015. Going into 2016, he was ranked the #5 prospect in the Athletics chain. He began the campaign with the Stockton Ports and played 86 games for them, hitting .230, but still got a late-season promotion to the Midland RockHounds of the AA Texas League, where he played 5 games. he did somewhat better in 2017, as he raised his batting average to .266 in 23 games for Stockton before heading up to Midland. In 86 games there, he hit .224 with 3 homers and 27 RBIs, still not providing the type of offense the A's were looking for.

In 2018, he was with Midland the whole year and finally broke through, hitting .300/.368/.439 in 118 games, with 6 homers and 68 runs scored. However, the A's failed to add him to their 40-man roster after the season, so he became eligible for the 2018 Rule V Draft, which was held on December 13th at the conclusion of the winter meetings in Las Vegas, NV. He was the first overall selection, by the Baltimore Orioles. he made his major league debut with the Orioles on Opening Day, March 28, 2019.
