Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Quinn Priester was the first round pick of the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 2019 amateur draft, 18th overall, from a high school in the suburbs of Chicago, IL. He quickly signed for a $3.4 million bonus and reported to the GCL Pirates to begin his pro career, foregoing a commitment to attend Texas Christian University. He played both baseball and football until his junior year of high school, when having his fastball timed at 97 mph convinced him to concentrate on baseball. In football, he led his high school to a state title after switching from quarterback to wide receiver and had preliminary offers of a two-way scholarship from Northwestern University, which he turned down.

After 8 games in the Gulf Coast League, including 7 starts, he was promoted to the West Virginia Black Bears of the New York-Penn League for one final start and finished his first season with a record of 1-1, 3.19 and a 41/14 K/W ratio in 36 2/3 innings. He then had to sit out the 2020 season when the minor leagues were shut down by the Coronavirus pandemic, but returned with a vengeance in 2021. He made 20 starts for the Greensboro Grasshoppers of the High-A East, going 7-4, 3.04 before the Pirates shut him down, wanting to keep his innings below 100, given how little he had pitched recently. He ended up at 97 2/3 innings with 98 Ks and 39 walks. One of the highlights of his season was appearing in the 2021 Futures Game.

He was sidelined by an oblique issue during spring training in 2022, and as a result his season did not start until June 9th. Had he been healthy, he would likely have begin the year in AA, but the Pirates decided to let him pitch a few times for the Bradenton Marauders of the Florida State League. In his first outing, he was brilliant, not allowing a hit in 3 innings against the Clearwater Threshers, and three more relievers kept the Phillies farmhands in check to combine on a 3-0 no-hitter. He then appeared for three other teams that season, Greensboro, the Altoona Curve of the Eastern League and the Indianapolis Indians of the AAA International League. In 19 starts, he went 5-5, 3.29, logging 90 1/3 innings. He then pitched in the Arizona Fall League after the season.

He made his major league debut with the Pirates in the middle of the 2023 season, after starting the year in Indianapolis. He pitched well in AAA, going 9-4, 4.00 in 22 games. With the Pirates, 8 of his 10 games were starts and he finished at 3-3, 7.74, allowing 58 hits and 27 walks in 50 innings while walking 36. He continued to struggle at the major league level in 2024, as his record with the Pirates was 2-6, 5.04 in 10 games, but he did better in Indianapolis (3-1, 3.21 in 7 games). On July 29th, he was traded to the Boston Red Sox in a straight swap of prospects, with Pittsburgh receiving OF Nick Yorke in return. He made another 9 starts in AAA with the Worcester Red Sox, going 1-1, 5.40, and made 1 start for Boston. That came on September 29th against the Tampa Bay Rays and he gave up just 1 run in 5 innings to earn a 3-1 win. That ended up being his only appearance for the BoSox. He started the 2025 season back in Worcester, pitching 4 innings in his only start - a loss- before being traded to the Milwaukee Brewers on April 7th. In return, Boston received a prospect in Yophery Rodriguez, a Competitive Balance Round A pick in the 2025 amateur draft, and a player to be named later (John Holobetz). For his part, Quinn was immediately promoted to the Brewers' major league roster.

Priester's first season with Milwaukee was a great one. Starting on May 30th, the Brewers won every time he took the mound until the beginning of September: 17 consecutive games, including 14 starts and three long relief outings. During that stretch, culminating with a 5-2 win over his former team, the Pirates, on September 5th, he went 11-0, setting a franchise record for consecutive winning decisions. The previous record had been shared by Cal Eldred and Chris Bosio, who had both had 10-0 stretches during the same season, 1992. Not bad for someone who had been acquired simply to give the team some innings when a number of starting pitchers were unavailable. He lengthened both streaks by also winning his next start, on September 12th against the St. Louis Cardinals, which was also Milwaukee's 90th win of the season. Although he ended up with a no-decision on September 18th, the Brewers won again, 5-2 over the Los Angeles Angels to give him 19 straight appearances in a win.
