Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher PJ Poulin set his school's all-time record with 16 saves in his final season at the University of Connecticut in 2018. After that season, he was drafted by the Colorado Rockies in the 11th round of the 2018 amateur draft.

He played in the Rockies' minor league system from 2018 to 2023, missing the 2020 season when the minor leagues were shut down by the COVID-19 pandemic. He reached AAA for the first time with the Albuquerque Isotopes in 2022 and also pitched for them for all of the 2023 season. He was purchased by the Detroit Tigers during spring training in 2024 and split that season between the AA Erie SeaWolves and AAA Toledo Mud Hens, going 2-1, 2.10 with 4 saves in 45 games. He began 2025 with Toledo and was having an excellent season, going 7-1 with 2 saves in 35 games, and an ERA of 3.38. He also made his first three starts since turning pro during that period. On July 6th, his contract was selected by the Tigers, but he never got to pitch in the majors as the All-Star break intervened, and he was then designated for assignment on July 31st when the Tigers acquired some major league pitchers at the trading deadline and needed space on their roster to accommodate them. The Washington Nationals seized the opportunity to claim him off waivers on August 3rd and he made his big league debut two days later, pitching one scoreless inning in relief against The Athletics. He was a rare bright spot for the Nats that day, as they got crushed, 16-7.

He is a New England boy through and through, born in Massachusetts where he attended high school, and going to college in Connecticut. His last name is typical of the large French Canadian immigrant community that came to New England to work in its factories in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
