Pitcher Neil Ramirez represented Team USA in the 2006 World Junior Championship, going 1-0 with a 2.89 ERA and 10 strikeouts in the tournament. He was selected by the Texas Rangers in the supplemental first round of the 2007 amateur draft. Despite a commitment to Georgia Tech, he was signed by scout Russ Ardolina for $1 million right at the signing deadline and made his pro debut the following summer with the Spokane Indians, going 1-2 with a 2.66 ERA in 13 starts. With the Hickory Crawdads in 2009, he was 3-6 with a 4.75 ERA in 18 appearances. ack with Hickory in 2010, he went 10-8 with a 4.43 ERA in 28 games.
On August 23, 2013, Ramirez was the player to be named later in the deal that sent P Matt Garza from the Chicago Cubs to the Rangers at the trading deadline; C.J. Edwards, Justin Grimm and Mike Olt had already been sent to Chicago. He was named a Texas League All-Star after the season, having gone 9-3, 3.84 in 21 games for the Frisco Rough Riders before the trade. He then made one start with the Tennessee Smokies, allowing no runs on one hit in 4 2/3 innings. Between the two teams, he struck out 132 batters in 107 2/3 innings.
Ramirez was moved to the bullpen when he was sent to the AAA Iowa Cubs at the start of the 2014 season. In 6 outings, his ERA was 7.71 and he gave up 7 hits and 5 walks in 7 innings, althiough he did strike out 11 batters. He was called up to Chicago in late April and made his debut on April 25th with a scoreless inning of relief against the Milwaukee Brewers.
