Nathaniel Edmund Moreland

Nate Moreland pitched in integrated college and semi-pro leagues in California during the late 1930s before pitching for the Baltimore Elite Giants in 1940. He jumped to the Tampico Alijadores of the Mexican League for the 1941 season, then served in the U.S. Military during World War II, returning to Tampico in 1944, pitching again for the Elite Giants in 1945, and the Monterrey Industriales in 1946 before entering Organized Baseball. He pitched 10 years in the Class "C" Sunset League, Southwest International League, and Arizona-Texas League from 1947 to 1956, playing primarily for the El Centro Imperials and the Mexicali Eagles.
On March 19, 1942, Moreland and Jackie Robinson together unsuccessfully sought tryouts with the Chicago White Sox at their spring training camp in Pasadena, CA. White Sox manager Jimmy Dykes had high praise for both men, but turned them down, saying the White Sox organization would not allow it.
