Biographical Information[edit]
Mike Brumley was a journeyman infielder who saw action with six teams between 1987 and 1995. He saw action in a career best 92 games with the 1989 Detroit Tigers, but meager returns (.198/.251/.255 in 212 at bats) relegated him to organizational depth. He played for the US team that won Bronze in the 1982 Amateur World Series.
After his major league career, Brumley became a manager in the Arizona Diamondbacks (1998-1999) and Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (2001-2004) minor league systems. In-between those two gigs, he was a minor league bunting instructor for the Chicago White Sox in 2000. From 2005 to 2007, he was the Minor League Field Coordinator for the Texas Rangers. Brumley moved to the Los Angeles Dodgers organization in 2008 in a dual capacity. He returned to the field to manage the Ogden Raptors and also served as the Dodgers Assistant Minor League Field Coordinator. The Dodgers promoted Brumley to Minor League Field Coordinator in 2009.
In 2010, he became the third base coach of the Seattle Mariners. Brumley switched to first base coach for the 2011 through 2013 seasons. In 2014, he was named assistant hitting coach of the Chicago Cubs. This job only lasted one year and marked the final time Brumley would be a member of a major league coaching staff.
After a year as a private instructor, Brumley headed to Taiwan in 2017 as a hitting coach for the Uni-President Lions of the CPBL in 2016. Brumley probably worked as a private instructor again in 2017. In 2018, he joined the Atlanta Braves as their Minor League Hitting Coordinator. He continued in this role through 2021. Braves third baseman Austin Riley credited Brumley with much of his hitting success.
In June, 2024 Brumley died in a car accident. He was a baseball instructor in the Dallas, TX area with his son Logan Brumley[1] and others at the time of his death. Brumley was the son of Mike Brumley, a former catcher in the major leagues.
