Biographical Information[edit]
Mike Ashman played in the minor leagues for 6 years and for the USA national team.
Ashman represented the USA in the 1980 Amateur World Series. The Oakland Athletics picked him in the 24th round of the 1981 Amateur Draft, and he hit .247/.326/.303 in 64 games for the Medford A's in 1981. Ashman then crushed 16 homers with a .274/.365/.423 batting line for the Madison Muskies in 1982, finishing among the Midwest League leaders in RBI (81, 7th, between Iván Calderón and John Edmonds) and tying Todd Zacher for 10th in walks (71). He was 6th in the A's chain in homers, trailed only Jim Bennett and Tom Romano in RBI and was 4th in walks (between Tony Phillips and John Camacho.
He recorded a .257/.354/.390 batting line with 12 homers for the Albany A's in 1983. He played 97 games with a .274/.361/.350 batting line in 1984 for the Albany-Colonie A's, and he hit .279/.352/.372 in 40 games for the Huntsville Stars in 1985. Ashman also played 47 games for the AAA Tacoma Tigers, and his batting line was .278/.358/.323. He moved to the Pittsburgh Pirates organization in 1986, and he had a .232/.312/.322 batting line for the Nashua Pirates. He also played 29 games with the AAA Hawaii Islanders, but his batting line fell to .159/.196/.216 and he retired. Ashman then became an assistant coach for Riverside Community College for five years, and he served as hitting coach for the University of Nebraska for a season. He then became the coach of California State Polytechnic University-Pomona from 1996 to 2010, and he became a batting practice pitcher for the Los Angeles Angels.
