Biographical Information

Miguel Fermín has been a catcher and pitcher in the minors, peaking at AAA. He won minor league home run and batting titles before moving to the mound.

He was signed by Florida Marlins scouts Marc Del Piano and Jesus Campos. He hit .174/.189/.232 for the 2005 DSL Marlins, He improved to .290/.384/.351 for the same club in 2006, scoring 45 runs in 66 games and stealing 27 bases in 33 tries. He tied Jose Constanza for 4th in the Dominican Summer League and missed the top 10 in runs by one. He threw out 52% of runners who tried to steal against him. In '07, he batted .336/.386/.474 and was 13-for-14 in steal attempts. Had he qualified, he would have been 5th in the DSL in average (between Alexi Amarista and Alfredo Marte).

Coming to the US with the 2008 Jamestown Jammers, he was excellent, hitting .347/.374/.628 with 17 homers in 65 games. He led the New York-Penn League in average (.011 over Brian Baisley), runs (54, two over Paul Gran), homers (4 more than Phil Disher), total bases (152, two more than Disher), slugging (.079 over Luis Sumoza), OPS (1002, 86 better than Disher) and putouts and assists at catcher. He tied Colt Sedbrook for 3rd with 84 hits and was 5th with 47 RBI (between Baisley and Lonnie Chisenhall). He did not make the Baseball America list of the league's top 20 prospects, presumably due to his age (23).

His production dropped significantly with the 2009 Jupiter Hammerheads as he hit only .209/.248/.252 with one homer and 24 RBI in 92 games. With the Estrellas Orientales in the Dominican Winter League, he was 0 for 4. In 2010, he backed uo Jose Ceballos with Jupiter (.227/.280/.286 in 39 G) and played one game for the New Orleans Zephyrs (1 for 4, R) then was 0 for 1 for the Estrellas in the winter. He again split 2011 between the Hammerheads (.254/.283/.391 in 43 G) and New Orleans (3 for 20, 3 BB, 2B, 5 R, RBI). In the winter, he was 5 for 35 with 2 homers and 12 whiffs for the Estrellas.

With poor production three years in a row after his dominant 2008, the Marlins moved Miguel to the mound. He was 2-3 with a save and a 4.40 ERA in 22 games for Jamestown in 2012. In the winter, he allowed four unearned runs in four frames, going 1-1. He pitched in 2013 for the Greensboro Grasshoppers (0-2, Sv, 3.30, 33 K, 4 BB in 30 IP) and Jupiuter (1-1, 1.59 in 18 G). He was 0-1 with a 2.16 ERA for the 2013-2014 Estrellas. In the summer of 2014, he missed time due to right elbow problems. only pitching 9 games - 2 for the Batavia Muckdogs (1-0, 0 R in 3 IP) and 7 for Jupiter (0-2, 5.79). He did not pitch in winter ball.

Fermín played for the Dominican national team in the 2015 Pan American Games, allowing only one hit in 2 2/3 IP but it was a homer and he took the loss to Puerto Rico. In the 2015 Premier 12, he was 0-1 with a 10.80 ERA. He relieved Francisco Rondón with a 1-0 lead over the eventual champion South Korean national team in the 7th and one on, but served up a two-run homer to Dae-ho Lee and would give up two more runs while retiring only three batters in taking the loss.

Fermín became a defensive coach with the DSL Marlins in 2017. He coached the GCL Marlins in 2018 before returning to the DSL Marlins in 2019. After the cancelled 2020 season, Fermín served as the defensive coach for the DSL Marlins in 2021. The Marlins added a second Dominican Summer League team in 2022 called DSL Miami and Fermín was their defensive coach. For 2023 Fermín was listed as the catching coach for the DSL Marlins.
