Biographical Information

Masahiro Sakumoto played in Nippon Pro Baseball for 11 years.

Sakumoto was drafted by the Daiei Hawks in the 4th round of the 1995 NPB draft, and he had a 4.86 ERA in 24 games in 1996. He improved to 8-5 with a 2.26 ERA in 1997, and he went 6-6 with a 4.13 ERA in 1998. Sakumoto was 3-6 with a 4.97 ERA in 1999, and he allowed 2 runs in 3 1/3 innings in the 1999 Nippon Series Game 2. He surrendered 2 runs, including a solo shot to Leo Gómez, as the starter of Game 5, and the Hawks beat the Chunichi Dragons in 5 games. Sakumoto only pitched 3 games with a 10.32 ERA in 2000, and he went 1-1 with a 4.97 ERA in 2001. His ERA was 4.91 in 7 games in 2002, and he was traded to the Hanshin Tigers for Masashi Matsuda.

The Okinawa native allowed 10 runs in 10 2/3 innings in 2003, and he only got 4 appearances combined before the Tigers released him in 2005. Sakumoto then signed with the Yokohama BayStars, and he recorded a 3.86 ERA in 21 games in 2006. He spent the entire 2007 season in the minors, and he announced his retirement. He was the pitching coach for the Hawks from 2020 to 2021 and for their minors team from 2014 to 2019.

Overall, Sakumoto was 16-24 with a 4.67 ERA, struck out 222 and pitched 335 innings in 11 seasons in NPB.
