Mark Willoughby pitched for five seasons in the minors then became a scout.
Willoughby was picked by the New York Mets in the 13th round of the 1985 amateur draft. He debuted that summer with the Kingsport Mets, going 1-5 with a 5.11 ERA and 35 walks in 44 innings. At the plate, he went 1 for 4 with a double and two RBI. He tied for 10th in the Appalachian League in both losses and walks. In 1986, he was 1-3 with a 5.35 ERA for the Columbia Mets, issuing 30 walks in 33 2/3 innings. He was 1 for 8 with a walk, double and two runs. He pitched 17 games for Kingsport in 1987 with no decisions and a 4.34 ERA; control remained poor with 22 walks in 18 2/3 IP. With the 1988 GCL Mets, he posted a 0-2, 5.95 record. He ended up with the 1989 Pittsfield Mets, going 2-1 with a save and a 2.10 ERA. Overall, he was 4-11 with a save and a 4.56 ERA in 71 games (16 starts) as a pro, walking 113 and allowing 141 hits in 146 innings while striking out 118.
