Mark Wegner became a major league umpire at age 27. Wegner worked in the Pioneer League in 1992, Midwest League in 1993, Florida State League in 1994, Eastern League in 1995-1996, International League in 1997 and Pacific Coast League in 1998. He then became a big league umpire, joining the National League staff in 1998. In 2000, he became part of the integrated major league umpiring staff.
Wegner worked the 2008 All-Star Game and the 2009 World Baseball Classic. During the Classic, Wegner was involved in a controversial call in the Puerto Rico-Venezuela game. He initially ruled a hit by Ramón Hernández in play, resulting in a triple; on review, it was correctly called a home run by Hitoshi Watarida. He also worked the 2017 World Baseball Classic. He umpired a large number of postseason series, including the 2013 World Series and 2017 World Series.
