Biographical Information[edit]
Infielder Kevin McGonigle was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in Competitive Balance Round A of the 2023 amateur draft, with the 37th overall pick, out of a high school in the suburbs of Philadelphia, PA. He played in the 2022 U-18 Baseball World Cup, hitting .240/.367/.520 with 7 runs in 9 games for the champion US team while fielding .938 at second base. He grew up in Aldan, PA.
In his first professional season in 2023, he played a total of 21 games split between the FCL Tigers and Lakeland Flying Tigers of the Florida State League, batting .315/.452/.411. In 2024, he played 60 games for Lakeland and another 14 with the West Michigan Whitecaps of the Midwest League. Even though he missed some time with an injury, his slash line was an excellent .309/.401/.452, with 22 solen bases in 24 attempts. He was named the Player of the Year in the FSL as well as a post-season All-Star and a Class A All-Star.
In 2025, he played a total of 88 games between Lakeland, West Michigan and the AA Erie SeaWolves (aka "Moon Mammoths"). His .372 batting average in 36 games motivated his promotion from the Midwest League to AA, where he was one of the youngest players at the level in all of baseball. Overall, he batted .305/.408/.583 with 19 homers and 80 RBIs, as his power was now catching up with his already present batting average and OBP. After the season, he played in the Arizona Fall League and dominated a league made up of the best prospects from every organization, batting .362 in 19 games. He was the Player of the Month for June in the Midwest League and was also named that circuit's top prospect.
Given his success in 2024 and 2025, McGonigle was rated the #2 prospect in baseball heading into the 2026 season, after Konnor Griffin. He made the Tigers' Opening Day roster, starting at third base and batting sixth against the San Diego Padres on March 26th. He made that a memorable debut by going 4 for 5 with 2 runs and 2 RBIs in an 8-2 win; two of his hits were doubles off Nick Pivetta, the first one coming on the first pitch he saw as a major league batter. He was only the second player in Tigers history to launch his major league career with a four-hit game, the first having been Billy Bean on April 25, 1987. A couple of weeks later, on April 12th, he hit his first major league homer off Sandy Alcantara of the Miami Marlins. He was named the winner of the American League Rookie of the Month Award for April after hitting .328 and slugging .509 during the period.
