Biographical Information[edit]

Katsuhiko Kumon played in Nippon Pro Baseball for 9 years.

Kumon was drafted by the Yomiuri Giants in the 4th round of the 2012 NPB draft, and he only pitched 3 games combined for the big club in his first three seasons. He had a 3.86 ERA in 12 relief outings in 2016, and he was traded with Taishi Ota to the Nippon Ham Fighters for Shingo Ishikawa and Mitsuo Yoshikawa. Kumon had a solid 2.70 ERA in 41 appearances in 2017, and he notched 11 holds with a 2.17 ERA in 57 games in 2018. He notched a career-high 17 holds with a 3.96 ERA in 61 appearances in 2019, and he ranked 8th in games in the Pacific League. Kumon was mainly used as a LOOGY, and he only pitched 52 1/3 innings. He got his first career loss on July 11, 2020, and his 182 consecutive games from debut without a loss ended; that set a Japanese pro record. It was still the NPB record as of 2025. Kumon struggled in '20, and his ERA rose to 7.88 in 29 games. He pitched 10 games with a 3.68 ERA in 2021, and the Fighters traded him with Shota Hiranuma to the Seibu Lions for Ryusei Sato and Fumikazu Kimura in August. He had a 0.79 ERA in 14 games in the rest of the season, and he pitched 9 shutout innings with 7 holds in 18 games in 2022. He allowed 5 runs in 4 2/3 innings in 2023, and he announced his retirement.

Overall, Kumon was 8-3 with a 3.45 ERA, struck out 174 and pitched 214 innings in 252 games in 9 seasons in NPB.
