Karl Kuehl managed the Montreal Expos in 1976 and was a member of the Minnesota Twins coaching staff from 1977 to 1982. Kuehl was a scout for the Houston Astros from 1963 to 1968, Seattle Pilots in 1969, Milwaukee Brewers from 1970 to 1971, and Montreal Expos in 1971. From 1984-1991, Kuehl was the Farm Director for the Oakland A's. He later became an assistant to the General Manager of the A's. In his time with the Twins and the Athletics, he became interested in the mental aspects of playing baseball and co-wrote one of the first books on the issue with psychologist Harvey Dorfman in 1989, The Mental Game of Baseball, which remains a seminal work today. He also hired Dorfman to work with A's players. In 2006, he was awarded baseball's Roland Hemond Award his lifetime of work on scouting and player development, which included work in the Dominican Republic and Australia. He was in the Cleveland Indians front office until he retired in 2007. He died of pulmonary fibrosis in 2008.
