Biographical Information[edit]
Infielder Jose David Flores was drafted in the 38th round of the 1990 amateur draft by the Houston Astros. He played in the Astros' minor league organization from 1990 to 1994, reaching AA that last season with the Jackson Generals of the Texas League. His best season was in 1992, his second for the Asheville Tourists of the South Atlantic League, when he hit .267 in 121 games, with 54 runs and 47 RBIs. He set the Osceola Astros hitting streak record in May 1993 (Brian Hunter had held the mark previously). That year, he led the Florida State League's shortstops with 117 double plays.
After his playing days, Flores turned to coaching in Puerto Rico and has an extensive resume in that country. From 2004-2011 he managed the Bravos de Cidra in the Puerto Rico Amateur Baseball Federation. He returned to the Bravos in 2021 as their General Manager. He also coached in the Puerto Rican Winter League, now known as the Roberto Clemente Professional Baseball League.

Flores was interim manager for both Ponce and Caguas in the years he served those teams as a bench coach. Flores also guided the Puerto Rican national team in the 2011 Pan American Games (7th place) and 2011 Baseball World Cup (tied for 9th). Not confined to baseball, Flores also managed in the FBPR, a Puerto Rican basketball league, winning a title.
In addition, Flores has considerable experience coaching in the United States. In 2008, he managed the DSL Indians. The Chicago Cubs hired Flores in 2013 for their Minor League Infield Coordinator position, a role he continued through 2017. He received his first major league assignment in 2018 as a first base coach for the Philadelphia Phillies. He then joined the Baltimore Orioles as their third base coach for the 2019 and 2020 seasons. The Boston Red Sox hired Flores in 2022 as a bench coach for the Worcester Red Sox where he stayed through 2024. The Red Sox promoted him to the major league staff in 2025 as their first base coach. He retained that position for the first few weeks of 2026, until a shake-up of the coaching staff resulted in the firing of manager Alex Cora and five of his coaches on April 25th. When the dust settled, Jose David had been promoted to interim bench coach under new manager Chad Tracy.
Early in his career, Flores was often confused with namesake Jose Flores, a former major leaguer and minor league manager so he started using his middle name. In recent years, he is sometimes confused with Jose Ramon Flores who is also a coach.
