Biographical Information[edit]

Outfielder Jonah Cox is the son of former major league catcher Darron Cox. He was drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the 6th round of the 2023 amateur draft from Oral Roberts University, where he played in the 2023 College World Series. His brother Joshua also played for Oral Roberts.

He began his professional career in 2023 with the ACL Athletics, then was promoted to the Stockton Ports of the California League after 7 games. In 35 games between the two stops, he batted .287 with 2 homers and 15 RBIs. On February 2, 2024, he was traded to the San Francisco Giants in return for P Ross Stripling, whose contract the Giants wanted to get rid of, and he split that season between the San Jose Giants and the Eugene Emeralds. In a total of 100 games, he batted .267/.377/.370 with 80 runs, 5 homers, 39 RBIs and 58 stolen bases, clearly indicating that speed was his biggest asset. In 2025, he spent a full season in the Northwest League with Eugene, batting .257 in 126 games, scoring 89 runs and driving in 58. His power began to show up, with 24 doubles, 10 triples and 10 homers, and he stole another 58 bases.

He started the 2026 season in AA with the Richmond Flying Squirrels. He was batting .400 in 44 games when he got the call to San Francisco, skipping over AAA for the time being and taking the roster spot of veteran OF Will Brennan. He made his debut on May 31st, as a pinch-runner for Casey Schmitt in the 8th inning of a 19-6 blowout win over the Colorado Rockies. He then scored on a single by Rafael Devers combined with an error, and stayed in the game to play center field. He came up to bat for the first time in the 9th and collected a double, although it came off back-up catcher Brett Sullivan.
