Biographical Information

Johnny Vergez coached the baseball team at Saint Mary's College of California after his playing career.

Record

Vergez is the only player ever to hit the first 20 home runs of his career at the same ballpark. His first 27 were all at the Polo Grounds. Next in this category are Burgess Whitehead (17), Bill Rigney (16), Freddie Fitzsimmons (14), Andy Cohen (13) and Ryan Theriot (12). All but Theriot also hit their long balls at the Polo Grounds.

Notable Achievement

• Won a World Series with the New York Giants in 1933 (he did not play in the World Series)
