Biographical Information[edit]

The Kansas City Royals drafted Joe Dillon in the 7th round of the 1997 Amateur Draft from Texas Tech University. Dillon played for several years in the minor leagues with three different teams before making his major league debut with the 2005 Florida Marlins. Dillon headed overseas the following year. He played in Japan with the Yomiuri Giants during the 2006 season. He hit .195 (17 for 87) with four extra-base hits in 31 games while playing 1st base, 3rd base, and the outfield. After returning to the U.S., Dillon split the 2007-2009 seasons between the major and minor leagues. He completed his playing career in 2010 with the Durham Bulls in the Tampa Bay Rays organization.

Dillon began his coaching career in 2013 as a volunteer assistant coach with the Texas Tech Red Raiders. He returned to professional baseball in 2014 where he held a succession of two year stints with different organizations. Dillon served as hitting coach of the Syracuse Chiefs in 2014-2015. In 2016, he joined the Miami Marlins as Minor League Hitting Coordinator. In 2018, he was named assistant hitting coach of the Washington Nationals. In 2020, he was named hitting coach of the Philadelphia Phillies and stayed in that position until the Phillies fired him with one game left in the 2021 season. The Nationals re-hired Dillon in 2022 and he worked for two years as their Minor League Hitting Coordinator. Dillon returned to the majors in 2024 as an assistant hitting coach for the Kansas City Royals. The Royals dismissed him after the 2025 season. Dillon returned to the minors in the Chicago Cubs' chain as hitting coach of the Knoxville Smokies in 2026.
