Biographical Information[edit]

Reliever Jeff Neely pitched in the Pittsburgh Pirates system from 1988 to 1991. With a 2.45 ERA, he was a successful pitcher overall, but faltered at Triple-A (4.57 ERA) and never ascended to the majors.

He was undrafted. With the GCL Pirates in 1988, he had a 2.55 ERA in 14 games and followed that with a breakout 10-8, 1.22 ERA season for the Augusta Pirates in 1989. In 54 games, he had 50 games finished and 19 saves, while posting a 0.920 WHIP. He didn't allow a single home run in 95 2/3 innings and only two South Atlantic League hurlers with 50-plus appearances had better ERAs (Jim Hvizda, 1.19 and Dean Weese, 0.81). The next year, he went 5-5 with 12 saves and a 2.09 ERA in 52 games between three clubs, despite a 4.15 mark in 6 games in his first try at Triple-A. He wrapped up his career in 1991 after going 2-5 with a 4.76 ERA in 47 games between two clubs, 42 of which came with the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons.

Overall, he went 21-21 with 130 games finished, 41 saves and a 2.45 ERA in 167 games. In 275 innings, he allowed 222 hits and 86 walks (1.120 WHIP), while striking out 250 batters. He was 3-5, 4.57 in 48 Triple-A games.
