Biographical Information[edit]

OF Jacob Melton was drafted by the Houston Astros in the 2nd round of the 2022 amateur draft out of Oregon State University. He had two good seasons in the Astros' minor league system in 2023 and 2024. In 2023, he hit .245/.334/.467 in 99 games between the Class A Asheville Tourists and AA Corpus Christi Hooks, with 23 homers, 83 runs and 55 RBIs. In 2024, he started the year with Corpus Christi and finished it with the AAA Sugar Land Skeeters, playing 105 games in total and hitting .253/.310/.426. He hit 15 homers, 59 runs and 54 RBIs.

In 2025, he started the season with Sugar Land before making his big league debut on June 1st. Unfortunately, an injury cut short his season, as he played 35 games in Sugar Land, batting .286 with 6 homers and 17 RBIs. With the Astros, he hit .157 in 32 games. An ankle sprain put him on the injured list in mid-June, and kept him out until the end of July. Following the season, on December 19th, he was traded twice in one day, first going to the Pittsburgh Pirates along with P Anderson Brito in return for P Mike Burrows. The Bucs then immediately flipped him and Brito to the Tampa Bay Rays in return for three major league players - 2B Brandon Lowe, OF Jake Mangum and P Mason Montgomery.
