Biographical Information[edit]

Ike Butler saw fleeting action in the majors in 1902 with the Baltimore Orioles. Three years younger than fellow Oriole "Iron" Joe McGinnity, he managed a 1-10, 5.34 record, completing 12 of his 14 starts (16 appearances total). Two of those complete games were pitched on consecutive days, both against the American League champion Philadelphia Athletics, on September 10th and 11th; his 10 walks allowed in the latter game are the most in a complete game pitched on zero days of rest. Butler lost his first seven complete games to become the first of only five modern era pitchers to begin a career that way. He set a deadball era record for most hits allowed per 9 innings that season with 12.997; the two pitchers behind him on the list were both teammates with the Orioles, Jack Katoll and Charlie Shields.

Ike won nearly 200 games in the minors, his biggest year coming in 1907 when he won 32 games for the Tacoma Tigers of the Northwestern League. He managed the 1904 Portland Browns and 1909 Tacoma Tigers.
