Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Hunter Dobbins was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 8th round of the 2021 amateur draft, out of Texas Tech University, where he had not played that season after undergoing Tommy John surgery following his sophomore season.
He began his professional career in 2022 with the Salem Red Sox of the Carolina League, going 0-5, 5.22 in 17 starts. He pitched just 69 innings as the Red Sox limited his innings, which explains the lack of wins. In 2023, he went 9-6, 3.67 and pitched 112 2/3 innings between the High-A Greenville Drive and the AA Portland Sea Dogs. In 2024, he again split his season between two teams, starting with Portland and finishing with the Worcester Red Sox of the AAA International League. His numbers were good once again, as he finished at 8-5, 3.08 in 25 starts and 125 2/3 innings.
He made his debut for Boston on April 6, 2025 starting the second game of a doubleheader against the St. Louis Cardinals after a rainout the previous day. With his parents in attendance at Fenway Park, he gave up 2 runs in 5 innings and received excellent run support, as Boston scored 18 times, to earn his first big league win. He only pitched 4 games in the minors, between AA and AAA, and in the majors was 4-1, 4.13 in 13 games, 11 of them starts, and 61 innings. His promising season ended on July 12th when he was placed on the injured list with an ACL tear, an injury he sustained while covering first base in the 2nd inning in a start against the Tampa Bay Rays the day before. He did not return after that. On December 21st, he was the most experienced of three pitchers sent by Boston to the St. Louis Cardinals to acquire veteran catcher-turned-first baseman Willson Contreras. The other two players involved, Blake Aita and Yhoiker Fajardo, were still in the minors, while Dobbins was expected to compete for a spot in the Cards' starting rotation in 2026.
His father Lance Dobbins was a minor league pitcher in the 1990s.
