Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Hunter Barco was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates with the 44th overall pick of the 2022 amateur draft, in the second round out of the University of Florida. That was in spite of undergoing Tommy John surgery in May. Were it not for the surgery, he would have been a certain first-rounder, as he was considered the top college recruit among pitchers when he joined the Gators as a freshman in 2020, after turning down an offer from the New York Mets who had taken him in the 24th round of the 2019 amateur draft. He was signed by scout Cam Murphy.

He was a winner in his major league debut for the Pirates on September 23, 2025. He pitched a scoreless inning of relief in a 4-2 win against the Cincinnati Reds after starter Johan Oviedo had failed to go five innings. It was up to the official scorer to pick the winning pitcher, and he chose Hunter over Dauri Moreta, who had recorded only one out to complete the 5th inning, and three other relievers who went one inning each and also kept the Reds from scoring.
