Biographical Information[edit]
Hisashi Tokano played in Nippon Pro Baseball for 11 years.
Tokano was drafted by the Yokohama BayStars in the 5th round of the 1992 NPB draft, and he spent his first two seasons in the NPB Farm Leagues. His ERA was 6.75 in 11 games in 1995, and he was 1-5 with a 4.42 ERA in 1996. Tokano improved to 10-7 with a 4.11 ERA in 1997, and he was 7th in wins in the Central League. He then went 7-8 with a 5.17 ERA in 1998, and he allowed 3 runs in 2 innings in the 1998 Nippon Series Game 3. The BayStars beat the Seibu Lions in 6 games. Tokano slumped to 2-6 with a 7.10 ERA in 1999, and his ERA was 7.50 in 6 games in 2000.
The BayStars then traded him with Kiyoshi Arai and Tatsuya Shindo to the Orix Blue Wave for Hirofumi Ogawa, Yu Sugimoto and Kazuyuki Maeda, and Tokano went 2-4 with a 4.06 ERA in 43 games in 2001. He was 3-3 with a 4.01 ERA in 2002, and his ERA rose to 5.04 in 34 games in 2003. Tokano bounced back with a 4-0 record and a 2.61 ERA in 40 games in 2004, and he was assigned to the Rakuten Golden Eagles in 2005 when a merger between Orix and the Kintetsu Buffaloes cut back on the number of Orix players, while the expansion Rakuten team was being added. He recorded a 5.25 ERA in 12 appearances in 2005, but he then suffered from testicular cancer and he announced his retirement.
Overall, Tokano was 32-35 with a 4.72 ERA, struck out 466 and pitched 593 1/3 innings in 11 seasons in NPB.
