Biographical Information[edit]

Yu Sugimoto played in Nippon Pro Baseball for 8 years

Sugimoto was 18-11 with a 2.42 ERA in the Tokyo Metropolitan Area University Baseball League, and he completed a no-hitter against Daito Bunka University. He was drafted by the Orix Blue Wave in the first round of the 1996 NPB draft, and he went 3-3 with a 3.75 ERA in his first season. Sugimoto slumped to 0-7 with a 6.04 ERA in 1998, and he went 2-2 with a 5.40 ERA in 1999. He struggled in 2000 as he went 4-8 with a 5.73 ERA, and he was traded with Hirofumi Ogawa and Kazuyuki Maeda to the Yokohama BayStars for Tatsuya Shindo, Kiyoshi Arai and Hisashi Tokano. Sugimoto's ERA was 2.39 in 9 games in 2001, and he had a 1-3 record with a 4.53 ERA in 2002. He stayed in the minors for the entire 2003 season, and the BayStars released him. The Yakult Swallows picked him up, and he pitched 43 games with a 5.24 ERA in 2004. He allowed 3 runs in an inning in 2005, and he announced his retirement.

Overall, Sugimoto was 12-23 with a 4.93 ERA, struck out 258 and pitched 319 1/3 innings in 8 seasons in the NPB.
