Hiroaki Shibaike pitched in Nippon Pro Baseball for 8 years.
Shibaike was the greatest pitcher in Senshu University's history, and he went 41-31 with a 2.17 ERA in his college career. He won two MVPs and one Best Nine awards, and he held the school record for most appearances, wins and strikeouts. He also completed the first perfect game of the All-Japan University Baseball Championship Series, in the semifinal in 1965 against Tokai University, and he led his school to their only All-Japan title as of 2024. He was drafted by the Kintetsu Buffaloes in the 5th round of the 1968 NPB draft, and he only got 3 appearances combined in his first two seasons.
The Kobe native went 2-5 with a 1.71 ERA in 1971, and his ERA was 3.69 in 40 appearances in 1972. On May 6, 1972, he plunked Katsuo Osugi and Osugi charged the mound with his bat. Shibaike was then traded to the Kintetsu Buffaloes for cash, but he struggled as he recorded a 5.87 ERA in 23 games in 1973. He only got 4 appearances in 1974, and he was traded back to Kintetsu with Yutaka Yanagida for Masahiro Doi. Shibaike notched 4 saves with a 2.25 ERA in 27 games in 1975, and he tied Masaharu Mitsui for 5th in saves in the Pacific League. He went 0-4 with a 4.85 ERA in 1976, and he was traded to the Chunichi Dragons for Masataka Shirataki. Shibaike pitched 14 games with a 4.33 ERA in 1987, and he announced his retirement in 1988.
Overall, Date was 11-13 with a 3.34 ERA and 8 saves, struck out 159 and pitched 361 1/3 innings in 8 seasons in NPB.
