Biographical Information

Pitcher Gerald Alexander wore number 48 during his three years with the Texas Rangers from 1990 to 1992, his only major league experience.

The Rangers had drafted him in the 21st round of the 1989 amateur draft, out of Tulane University, so his rise to the majors was very fast for such a low draft pick. It was largely based on a great minor league season in 1990, that saw him go 19-3 between the Port Charlotte Rangers of the Florida State League and the Oklahoma City 89ers of the American Association. In Port Charlotte, he won 6 of 7 starts with an ERA of 0.63, which explains why the Rangers had him skip AA altogether. He made his big league debut as a September call-up, starting against the Kansas City Royals on September 9th and allowing 3 runs on 8 hits in 3 1/3 innings. He did not figure in the decision that, and neither in his next two outings, one start and one relief appearance. His ERA was 7.71 in 7 innings.

In 1991, he made 2 starts for Oklahoma City but otherwise spent the season with Texas as a swingman, making 9 starts in 30 appearances and finishing at 5-3, 5.24. He pitched 89 1/3 innings, struck out 50 batters and walked 48. His first major league win came on May 19th when he pitched 4 innings of one-run ball in relief in a 12-4 win over the Boston Red Sox. In 1992, he spent most of the season in the minors, only making 3 appearances for Texas, all in relief, in May and June. He totaled only 1 2/3 innings and his ERA was 27.00, but he did pick up a win. With Oklahoma City, he went 7-8, 4.50 in 38 games, including 10 starts, and also record 2 saves. In 1993, he split the season between Oklahoma City and the [[Canton-Akron Indians], the AA affiliate of the Cleveland Indians in the Eastern League after being traded to Cleveland with Allan Anderson in return for Dave Eiland on August 4th, in a trade involving only pitchers. He finished at 2-2, 8.37 between the two stops in what was his last professional season.
