Biographical Information[edit]
George Needham was a professional baseball infielder and outfielder whose career ran from 1903 through 1913. He played for the Utica Pent-Ups, Columbia Gamecocks, Lancaster Red Roses, Buffalo Bisons, Montreal Royals, New Britain Perfectos, Des Moines Boosters, St. Joseph Drummers, Guelph Maple Leafs, Hamilton Hams, Lawrence Colts, Waterbury Finnegans, Worcester Busters, and Charleston Sea Gulls. In 1906 he also served as head baseball coach at University of South Carolina, where his club finished 1-7.[2]
That made Needham an unusual baseball figure in Columbia, because during the same spring he was coaching the collegiate Gamecocks (nicknamed around 1900), he was also playing for the city's Columbia Gamecocks club in the South Atlantic League.[3] He later managed in the minor leagues as a player-manager for the Guelph Maple Leafs in 1912 and opened the 1913 season as player-manager of the Charleston Sea Gulls before ending his professional career that year.[4]
