Biographical Information[edit]
Shortstop George Lombard Jr. is the son of former major league outfielder George Lombard. He was taken with the 26th pick of the 2023 amateur draft by the New York Yankees, from a high school in Florida where he was also an elite soccer player. He was named the Miami-Dade Athlete of the Year in his senior year of high school.
After signing with the Yankees, he played 13 games in the minors in 2023, between the FCL Yankees and the Tampa Tarpons of the Florida State League, hitting .311 with an OBP of .466. In 2024, he started the year with Tampa, then was promoted to the High-A Hudson Valley Renegades of the South Atlantic League on August 6th. He played a total of 110 games between the two teams, with a slash line of .231/.338/.334, with 25 doubles, 5 homers, 56 runs and 45 RBIs. He also stole 39 bases in 47 attempts.
In 2025, he started the year at Hudson Valley but was promoted to the AA Somerset Patriots after just 24 games on May 6th. He was batting .329 at the time, but did not his as well after the promotion, even though he was named to play in the 2025 Futures Game. He batted .215 in 108 games in the Eastern League, putting him at .235/.367/.381 in 132 games, with 9 homers and 49 RBIs. He was a non-roster invitee to the Yankees' major league spring training before the 2026 season, where he was described as being major league-ready on defense, even if he still needed to work on his hitting. He was slated to return to Somerset to begin the year.
In addition to his father, his younger brother Jacob Lombard also plays baseball and is considered a likely top-10 pick coming out of high school in the 2026 amateur draft.
