Gene Roof's first professional season was with the GCL Cardinals in 1976. He played in only 5 games (.238, 0, 2) but was also in 53 games with the Johnson City Cardinals of the Appalachian League, hitting .224. He did better in 1977 with Johnson City, as he was named to the Appalachian League All-Star team after hitting .361 with 5 homers and 33 RBIs in 59 games, He also played 42 games with the gastonia Cardinals that season.
He reached the major leagues with the St. Louis Cardinals in September of 1981 and hit .300 in 23 games. He then hit .267 in 11 games for the Cards in 1982, the year they won the World Series but was not on the postseason roster. In 1983, he had just 3 at-bats with the Cards, then in September was claimed off waivers by the Montreal Expos, going 2-for-12 in 8 games. During those three years, he spent the bulk of his time win AAA, with the Springfield Redbirds in 1981 and the Louisville Redbirds the next two seasons, hitting .348, .306 and .309. That type of success should have earned him a longer look, but St. Louis was a very strong team at the time. In 1984, he went to spring training with Montreal, but received just a cursory look before being sent down to the AAA Indianapolis Indians. Before long, he was back with Louisville, in the Cardinals' organization, and hit .302 between the two teams. However, he never made it back to the big leagues, and retired as a player after a few games as a player/coach for the Toledo Mud Hens in 1987.
Roof was a coach for Toledo in 1987-1988, before getting his first minor league managerial assignment in 1989. He was the first base coach for the Detroit Tigers from 1992 to 1995. After another stint as a minor league manager, he returned to coaching as the minor league baserunning coordinator for the Tigers in 2011-2012.
Gene is the father of Shawn Roof, Eric Roof and Jonathan Roof, the brother of Phil Roof and minor leaguers Paul Roof, David Roof, and Adrian Roof, and the cousin of Eddie Haas and minor leaguer Lou Haas.
