Biographical Information[edit]
Outfielder Frank Wehner played in the minor leagues from 1951 to 1953 and from 1955 to 1958.
He had solid power, hitting no less than 12 home runs in a season, and averaging about 16.5 dingers per campaign; he peaked at 22 between the Binghamton Triplets and Birmingham Barons in 1956. In his first campaign, he hit .306/.464/.486 with 12 home runs, 76 RBI, 82 walks and just 24 Ks in 82 games for the Amsterdam Rugmakers in 1951. He was prolific at drawing walks, with 99 between the Norfolk Tars and Raleigh Capitals in 1952. He matched that number with the Greensboro Yankees in his final season, then added an unknown number in 7 games for the Austin Senators, with whom he also spent part of the season.
Overall, Wehner hit .275 with ~116 homers, ~472 RBI, ~585 walks and ~370 Ks in 702 games over 7 seasons.
Prior to playing professionally, he represented the United States in the 1951 Pan American Games, leading the tournament in runs scored (13) and tying for the lead in homers (3). The team took Silver. As those were the first Pan American Games, he held the Pan Am record for both categories; others matched his home run total but it was not broken until Fred Lynn did so 20 years later.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
