Eric Cerantola has won a Silver Medal with the Canadian national team.
Cerantola was picked in the 8th round of the 2016 Ontario Hockey League draft by the Owen Sound Attack. [1] He never played for the team, however. In baseball, he represented Canada in the 2017 U-18 Baseball World Cup. He was 0-1 with a 7.20 ERA, taking the hard loss against #1 USA. [2] The Tampa Bay Rays took him in the 30th round of the 2018 amateur draft but he did not sign.
Opting for college, he was 3-0 with a 4.30 ERA at Mississippi State University in 2019, fanning 21 in 14 2/3 IP though he walked 11. That summer, he was 2-0 with a 2.25 ERA for the Amsterdam Mohawks, with 22 K to 8 BB in 12 IP. He also played for Canada in the 2019 Pan American Games, one of three collegians on the team (alongside Ben Abram and Edouard Julien). He was the only one of Canada's 12 pitchers who did not get into a game as they took the Silver Medal. [3]
Eric started 2020 1-1, 3.18 in four starts with 22 K in 17 IP before the COVID-19 pandemic ended the college season early. He then went 0-1, 5.71 in 10 games in 2021 before being taken by the Kansas City Royals in the 5th round of the 2021 amateur draft. After signing, he pitched four times for the ACL Royals Blue and the ACL Royals Gold, Kansas City's two teams in the Arizona Complex League. In 2022, he split his season between the Class A Columbia Fireflies and the High-A Quad Cities River Bandits. His combined record was 1-3, 5.34 in 10 games, all starts, and 30 1/3 innings.
In 2023, he pitched a total of 76 1/3 innings during the minor league season, more than twice as many as in any of the previous four seasons, and another 12 in the Arizona Fall League. Between Quad Cities and the AA Northwest Arkansas Naturals, he was 3-4, 3.66 in 32 games with 2 saves and 99 strikeouts. In 2024, he once again appeared for two teams, this time Northwest Arkansas and the AAA Omaha Storm Chasers, going a combined 3-4, 2.97 in 37 games (7 starts) and 58 1/3 innings. In 2025, he was 2-2, 4.04 in 38 games for Omaha, all but one as a reliever. Following the season, he played winter ball in the Dominican League with the Aguilas Cibaenas.
He was named to Team Canada's roster for the 2026 World Baseball Classic. He did very well in his two relief appearances for the Maple Leaf, not giving up a hit or a walk in 1 1/3 inning as Canada advanced further than it had ever done in the tournament. He started the 2026 season at Omaha and was 1-0, 1.42 after 12 games when he got the call to the Show, making his debut on May 6th, four days after celebrating his 26th birthday. In his debut, he pitched the 9th inning of a 3-1 loss to the Cleveland Guardians, giving up a a hit and a walk but no runs while picking up a pair of strikeouts. That made him only the fourth Canadian-born pitcher in Royals history, following Paul Spoljaric, Ryan Braun and Jeff Francis.
