Biographical Information[edit]
Elmer Rodríguez, who is also known as Elmer Rodríguez-Cruz, entered 2026 as a consensus top-100 prospect in baseball. He made his major league debut that year.
He was taken by the Boston Red Sox in the 4th round of the 2021 amateur draft and signed for a $497,500 bonus; he was the only pitcher the Red Sox took in the first six rounds that year. He made his pro debut with the FCL Red Sox the next summer and was 0-3 with a 1.95 ERA before being promoted to the Salem Red Sox, where he allowed one run in six innings. In 2023, he had a 6-3, 2.60 record for Salem. He split 2024 between Salem (3-4, 2.51, 73 K in 61 IP) and the Greenville Drive (2-1, 3.77). He was then traded to division rivals the New York Yankees in exchange for Carlos Narvaez. [1]
In 2025, he pitched for the Hudson Valley Renegades (6-4, 2.26 in 15 G), Somerset Patriots (5-3, 2.64 in 11 G) and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (0-1, 7.20 in 1 G), with a composite 11-8, 2.58 record and 176 K in 150 IP. He led Yankees farmhands in strikeouts, 8 ahead of Carlos Lagrange. He nearly led all of minor league baseball in whiffs, three behind leader Jonah Tong. He was rated as one of baseball's top prospects by Baseball America (#59, second to George Lombard Jr. in the Yankees chain), MLB.com (#82, 3rd among Yankees behind Lombard and Lagrange) and Baseball Prospectus (#62, 3rd, after Dax Kilby and Lombard). Because the player the Yankees had traded to acquire him, Narvaez, had in the meantime become the starting backstop for Boston, there was a lot more attention paid to Elmer than would have been had he been a random prospect within the organization: it was important for him to succeed, or Yankees fans would think they had gotten fleeced in trading Narvaez.
The right-handed hurler made the Puerto Rican national team for the 2026 World Baseball Classic. [2] He started one game, against Cuba, giving up no runs on one hit in 3 innings. Edwin Díaz saved his win over Julio Robaina. He began the 2026 season with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, making 4 starts and going 1-2, 1.27 before being called up to New York to make his debut on April 29th. A few months short of his 23rd birthday, he was the youngest player to pitch for the Yankees since Deivi Cruz in 2021. There was a lot of hype around his debut, a start on the road against the Texas Rangers. He did not pitch badly, giving up 2 runs on 4 hits in 4 innings, but he also walked 4 batters while striking out 3, so there was a lot of traffic on the bases. He was charged with a 3-0 loss as the Yankees' bats were unusually quiet against Nathan Eovaldi and Jacob Latz, who combined on a five-hitter.
